Download a website that is behind a login

Why most website downloaders cannot do this

A normal website downloader visits each page as a stranger. On a site that needs a login, every page it reaches is the login page, so that is all you get back.

Download Any Site can use your own signed-in session instead. You sign in to the website in your browser as usual, export its cookies with a free extension, and paste them in. The pages a signed-in user sees are then saved for you.

How to download a site you sign in to

1. Install Cookie-Editor. It is a free browser extension: Cookie-Editor on the Chrome Web Store. It works in Chrome, Edge and Brave.
2. Sign in to the website you want to download, in that browser.
3. Export the cookies as JSON. On that website, click the Cookie-Editor icon in the toolbar, then Export and choose JSON (not "Header String" or "Netscape"). The cookies are copied to your clipboard. The export is a list in square brackets, one entry per cookie, each with the website's domain, the cookie's name and its value:

4. Paste it in the downloader, unchanged. In Website Downloader, choose Backend HTML UI, paste the cookie export, tick the box confirming the account is yours (or that you are authorised to access it), and start the download. The website address is read from the cookies, or you can enter the page to start from.

Because you sign in yourself, we never see or ask for your password. Before each download you confirm the account is yours or that you are authorised to access it, and that confirmation is recorded.

Keeping your account safe

• The cookies are used only for that download and are never saved to your account. When the download finishes they are deleted automatically.
• The ZIP contains private pages from your account, so keep it to yourself.
• Signing out of the website in your browser ends the session the cookies belong to.
• Only download accounts that are yours or that you are allowed to access, and check the site's own terms.

What people download behind a login

• Their own account data: invoices, settings, profile pages and dashboards, kept as files they control.
• Course and training material they have paid for, to read offline.
• Internal tools and dashboards, archived before a system is switched off or replaced.
