HTTrack, wget and why people look for an alternative
HTTrack and wget --mirror have been the standard free ways to mirror a website for over twenty years. They are good tools, and for large, simple, static sites they still work well.
They were built for a web made of plain HTML files, though, and that shows on today's sites:
- They do not run JavaScript. On sites built with React, Vue, Next.js, Webflow or Wix, much of the content is added by JavaScript after the page loads. HTTrack and wget save the page before that happens, so you get empty sections or a blank page.
- They need setup. You install a desktop program, then work through filters, depth limits and user-agent settings until the mirror comes out right. HTTrack's desktop app is for Windows and Linux; on a Mac you are using the command line or a web-based front end.
- Logins are hard. Downloading pages behind a login means capturing and passing cookies yourself.
How Download Any Site is different
| HTTrack / wget | Download Any Site | |
|---|---|---|
| Install | Desktop program or command line | Nothing — use it from any browser |
| JavaScript-built sites | Often incomplete | Saved complete |
| Content that loads on scroll | Missed | Saved too |
| Pages behind a login | Manual cookie setup | Paste a cookie export from Cookie-Editor |
| Result | Folder on one computer | One ZIP, kept in your download history |
| Price | Free | From $3.99 a month |
When HTTrack is still the better choice
Be honest about the trade-offs: HTTrack is free and has no page limit, so for mirroring a very large, plain-HTML site on your own computer, and for scheduled mirroring from a script, it remains a fine choice. Download Any Site caps each download at 300 pages, and plans start at $3.99 a month.
If the site is modern, built with JavaScript, behind a login, or you simply do not want to install and tune a crawler, paste the link above and get a ZIP instead.
Also replacing SiteSucker, Cyotek WebCopy and "Save Page As"
The same applies to other desktop downloaders such as SiteSucker (Mac only) and Cyotek WebCopy (Windows only), and to your browser's own Save Page As, which saves one page at a time. See saving a website for offline viewing.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Download Any Site cost?
Plans start at $3.99 a month, and every plan includes whole websites and sites behind a login. HTTrack is free but has to be installed and configured, and misses content that JavaScript adds.
Why does HTTrack give me blank pages?
The site is probably built with JavaScript. HTTrack saves the HTML before the browser runs the scripts that add the content. Download Any Site saves each page once it has fully loaded, so the content is there.
Is there an HTTrack for Mac?
HTTrack’s desktop app is for Windows and Linux; on a Mac it runs from the command line. Download Any Site runs in the browser, so it works the same on a Mac, Windows, Linux or a Chromebook.
Can it download pages behind a login, like wget with cookies?
Yes, more easily. Export the cookies of your signed-in browser with the free Cookie-Editor extension and paste them in — no command-line flags.
Try it on your own site
