What "website source code" you can download

When a browser opens a website it receives front-end code: HTML for each page, CSS stylesheets, JavaScript files, images and fonts. That is exactly what Download Any Site saves for you, as files you can open, read and edit.

What no tool can download is the server-side code: the PHP, Python, Node.js or database behind the site. That never leaves the server, so anything that claims to download it is not telling the truth. For understanding, rebuilding or archiving how a site looks and works in the browser, the front-end code is what you need.

View source vs. downloading the site

Your browser's View page source shows the HTML the server first sent, one page at a time. On modern sites built with React, Vue or similar frameworks that is often an almost empty page, because the content is added later by JavaScript.

Download Any Site saves each page as it looks once it has fully loaded, including content that only appears as you scroll — not the empty shell. You get the page as you see it, not the empty shell, plus every file it depends on.

How to download a website's source code

  1. Paste the website link into the box above.
  2. Choose a single page or the whole site.
  3. Download the ZIP from your history when it is ready, even if you closed the tab.

Unzip it and open index.html in your browser: the site works offline, because the links between pages and to the CSS, JavaScript and images have been rewritten to point at the local copies.

What people use the code for

  • Learning front-end development by reading how real, production websites are put together.
  • Moving your site to a new stack, by hand or with an AI coding tool. See migrating a website with AI.
  • Migrating your own site away from a site builder whose code you cannot export.
  • Keeping an archive of a site before a redesign or before hosting ends.

Pages behind a login

Need the code of a dashboard or members' area? On a paid plan the downloader can use your signed-in session (a cookie export). See downloading a website behind a login.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I download the back-end code of a website?

No. Server-side code (PHP, Python, Node.js, databases) never leaves the server, so no downloader can get it. You get everything the browser receives: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images and fonts.

Will I get the code of a React or Vue website?

You get the rendered HTML of each page plus the compiled JavaScript and CSS files the site serves. The original React or Vue component files are not published by the site, so they cannot be downloaded.

How is this different from Save Page As in my browser?

Save Page As saves one page at a time and often breaks on modern sites. Download Any Site can save a whole site, captures JavaScript-built content, and rewrites the links between pages so the download works offline.

Can I download the code of a single page only?

Yes. Choose Single Page in the downloader. It is included in every plan, along with whole-site downloads.
